Kuwait, Gulf Nations Drive India’s ₹400 Crore Cow Dung Export Boom

147

India’s cow dung export industry has emerged as a surprising yet powerful success story, recording shipments worth nearly ₹400 crore in the financial year 2023–24. According to export data, India shipped around ₹125 crore worth of fresh cow dung, ₹173.67 crore of dung-based fertilisers, and ₹88.02 crore of compost manure, marking one of the strongest years for this eco-friendly agricultural commodity. What makes this export boom remarkable is the source of demand — Kuwait and other Gulf nations, where Indian cow dung has been found to significantly enhance crop output.

The surge in interest began after Kuwaiti agricultural scientists discovered that Indian cow dung greatly improves the yield and size of date palm fruits, one of the region’s most important crops. The natural composition of Indian cow dung, which is high in organic nutrients and beneficial microbes, makes it especially effective for arid soil conditions common across the Middle East. Soon, countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, and Bahrain began increasing their imports as well.

With just 181 Indian exporters currently operating in this niche sector, the market remains largely untapped, presenting a huge opportunity for agribusinesses, organic fertiliser brands, and rural enterprises seeking to scale sustainable products globally. Analysts believe that with proper regulation, quality certification, and supply-chain expansion, India could position itself as a leading supplier of organic manure to global markets, especially in regions heavily dependent on agricultural innovation to improve soil fertility.

This growing demand reflects a shift toward sustainable, chemical-free farming and highlights India’s potential to lead in natural agricultural solutions.
