In a bid to tackle New Delhi’s severe air pollution, Indian authorities conducted a cloud-seeding experiment over the city on Tuesday, aiming to induce rainfall and improve air quality. The exercise, carried out in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, involved spraying specific chemicals into clouds to encourage precipitation, which can help clear airborne pollutants and reduce smog levels in heavily polluted areas.

Officials reported that the city’s air quality remained in the “very poor” category ahead of the experiment, underscoring the urgency of measures to curb pollution in one of the world’s most affected capitals. Cloud seeding is being explored as a complementary solution to conventional pollution control measures, such as limiting vehicular emissions, restricting industrial activity, and promoting cleaner fuels.

Preliminary forecasts suggest that the experiment could result in light showers in some parts of the city, with additional trials scheduled throughout the week to maximize the impact. Authorities emphasized that such interventions are part of a broader strategy to mitigate the seasonal rise in air pollution, particularly during the winter months when stubble burning in neighbouring states and stagnant weather conditions exacerbate smog levels.
