A controversy has erupted at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra after a video from the inauguration of a newly opened souvenir shop went viral on social media. The clip allegedly shows a senior shrine board official hesitating to remove his shoes before participating in a pooja ceremony, an act that has drawn sharp criticism from devotees and religious groups.

According to posts circulating online, the issue began when a priest requested the official to remove his footwear before the ritual commenced, as per long-standing temple customs. The official was allegedly heard making a remark suggesting discomfort with such rituals, which further intensified public anger. Many users on social media described the act as disrespectful, especially given the sanctity of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, one of the country’s most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites.

The viral video has triggered a wider debate on the importance of observing religious customs and the conduct expected from officials managing sacred institutions. Several devotees have demanded clarification from the shrine board, while others have called for strict adherence to traditional norms during all religious ceremonies conducted on the premises.

As of now, the shrine authorities have not issued a detailed official statement confirming the complete context of the incident. However, the matter is expected to be reviewed, with many hoping for a transparent response to restore trust and uphold the dignity of the holy shrine.
