India is set to sign its largest-ever defence procurement agreement with France for the acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets, in a deal valued at approximately ₹3.25 lakh crore. The landmark agreement marks a major step in strengthening India’s air combat capabilities while significantly advancing the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
A key highlight of the deal is that nearly 80 per cent of the Rafale jets will be manufactured in India, in partnership with French aerospace major Dassault Aviation. This move is expected to give a strong push to India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem by promoting technology transfer, local supply chains, and advanced aerospace production capabilities. Several Indian public and private sector companies are likely to be involved in the manufacturing process, creating thousands of skilled jobs across the country.
For the Indian Air Force (IAF), the induction of 114 additional Rafale jets will substantially enhance operational readiness, air superiority, and strike capabilities. The Rafale is considered one of the world’s most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, equipped with cutting-edge avionics, weapons systems, and electronic warfare capabilities. The new fleet will help the IAF address evolving security challenges and maintain a strategic edge in the region.
Beyond defence preparedness, the deal is also expected to deepen India–France strategic ties, reinforcing cooperation in defence, technology, and geopolitics. As regional security dynamics continue to shift, this agreement underlines India’s focus on modernising its armed forces while building long-term global partnerships rooted in shared strategic interests.
