Syria Unveils New Banknotes, Removes Zeros to Signal Economic Reset

151

Syria has officially introduced a new series of redesigned banknotes as part of a significant currency reform. This reform includes removing zeros to help restore confidence in the national economy and simplify daily transactions. The announcement took place in Damascus with President Ahmad al-Sharaa present, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

The newly issued banknotes represent an important symbolic change. Portraits of political leaders, including former president Bashar al-Assad, have been taken off and replaced with cultural, historical, and national symbols. This change reflects an effort to strengthen collective identity and distance the economy from its troubled past. Officials described the change as both practical and symbolic, aiming to modernize Syria’s monetary system after years of conflict, inflation, and currency decline.

Government representatives emphasized that while the redenomination will make accounting, pricing, and cash transactions easier, it is not a complete solution. They stated that lasting recovery will rely on boosting domestic production, creating more jobs, enhancing the banking sector, and rebuilding investor confidence.

This currency reform follows Syria’s political transition in 2024 and is part of a larger economic reset. Analysts see the zero-removal strategy as a way to build confidence, a method often used by countries recovering from long-term instability. However, its success will depend on additional structural changes.

As Syria works through its post-conflict recovery, the new banknotes represent an attempt to move forward by combining economic reform with a new national narrative.
