Indian Scientists Spot ‘Alaknanda’ A Milky Way Twin Galaxy From 12 Billion Years Ago

259

In a major discovery that has excited astronomers around the world, Indian scientists Rahi Jain and Yogesh Wadadekar have found a rare Milky Way-like galaxy named Alaknanda, using data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This finding is remarkable because the galaxy existed nearly 12 billion years ago, when the universe was only about 1.5 billion years old.

Most galaxies from that ancient time are chaotic, irregular, and merging quickly, making mature structures very rare. However, Alaknanda is different. The galaxy has a clear spiral shape, featuring two distinct arms and a noticeable central bulge, closely resembling the structure of our own Milky Way.

This surprising level of galactic maturity challenges long-held ideas about cosmic evolution, which suggest that spiral galaxies need billions of years to form. Scientists now think Alaknanda could change our understanding of how early galaxies evolved, cooled, and organized into stable rotating disks much earlier than we previously thought.

The discovery also highlights India’s growing role in global astrophysics. Jain and Wadadekar’s work shows the country’s expanding skills in observational astronomy, big-data analysis, and deep-universe research.

As JWST continues to explore deeper into space, Alaknanda serves as a striking reminder that the early universe may have been much more structured and surprising than science used to believe.
