Skywatchers across the world are in for a dazzling celestial treat as the final full Moon of 2025 — known as the Cold Moon — rises on December 4. This year’s Cold Moon is not just another lunar event; it will also be the last supermoon of 2025, making it appear significantly larger and brighter than usual.
The Moon will reach its peak fullness only a few hours before hitting perigee — the point in its orbit where it is closest to Earth. This rare timing will make the Cold Moon appear nearly 8% larger and up to 16% brighter than an average full Moon, offering one of the most breathtaking lunar displays of the year. Astronomers note that while the size difference may be subtle to casual observers, the increased brightness and low-horizon rise will create a dramatic visual effect.
Traditionally, this December full Moon is known as the Cold Moon, a name rooted in Native American lore marking the onset of deep winter. In Cree culture, it is also called the Frost Exploding Trees Moon, referring to the cracking sounds of freezing forests. Medieval Europeans knew it as the Moon Before Yule.
Because of its closeness, the supermoon may also bring stronger king tides, especially along coastal regions.
For the most striking view, experts recommend watching the moonrise shortly after sunset, when the Moon illusion makes it appear even larger near the horizon — a perfect moment for photographers and stargazing enthusiasts.
