In a historic moment for India’s defence and aviation history, President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday became the first Indian President to fly in a Rafale fighter jet at the Air Force Station in Ambala, Haryana. The momentous sortie, conducted under the supervision of the Indian Air Force (IAF), underscored the nation’s growing air power and the operational prowess of the Rafale fleet.
The President was assisted by Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh, India’s first woman Rafale pilot, who gained national recognition during Operation Sindoor, when Pakistan falsely claimed to have captured her. Their joint flight marked a symbolic moment of empowerment and national pride, celebrating both women’s achievements in traditionally male-dominated fields.
The sortie was part of a two-aircraft mission that also included Air Chief Marshal A. P. Singh, highlighting the IAF’s readiness and precision in modern aerial warfare. Following the flight, President Murmu described the experience as “unforgettable,” praising the professionalism and dedication of IAF personnel who safeguard the nation’s skies.
Officials said the exercise demonstrated the Rafale’s strategic importance in India’s defence capabilities, particularly after its successful deployment in recent airstrikes targeting terrorist infrastructure across the border.
President Murmu’s participation not only marked a historic first for the Presidency but also served as a tribute to India’s advancing defence technology, gender inclusivity in the armed forces, and unwavering commitment to protecting national sovereignty.
