NEET Aspirant Allegedly Cuts his Own Foot to Get MBBS Seat Under Disability Quota

181

A disturbing incident linked to India’s highly competitive medical entrance system has come to light, triggering nationwide outrage. A NEET aspirant, Suraj Bhaskar, allegedly amputated part of his own foot in an attempt to secure admission to an MBBS course under the Persons with Disability (PwD) quota, according to police investigations.

Bhaskar, who had completed a Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm) and was preparing for NEET, initially claimed that he was attacked by unidentified assailants late at night in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh. He told authorities that the attackers brutally chopped off his foot, a claim that sparked public sympathy and concern. The incident was widely reported, with many expressing shock over the apparent act of violence.

However, as the investigation progressed, police say glaring inconsistencies emerged in Bhaskar’s account. Medical reports and forensic evidence allegedly suggested that the injury was self-inflicted. Investigators now believe that Bhaskar deliberately amputated a portion of his foot to qualify for a PwD certificate, hoping it would improve his chances of gaining admission to an MBBS seat through the disability reservation.

The revelation has sparked intense debate and anger, particularly among students, doctors, and disability rights advocates. Critics say the alleged act represents a gross misuse of welfare provisions meant to support genuinely disabled candidates, while also highlighting the extreme pressure and desperation surrounding medical admissions in India.

Authorities have stated that if the allegations are fully substantiated, strict legal action will be taken. The case has also prompted calls for stronger verification processes for disability certificates and greater mental health support for students facing intense academic stress.
