India Marks National Farmers’ Day, Honouring Charan Singh’s Legacy and Farmers’ Role

128

India observed National Farmers’ Day on Monday to honor the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. He is often seen as a strong advocate for farmers’ rights and rural development. This day pays homage to the farming community and their essential role in supporting India’s economy and food security.

National Farmers’ Day, also called Kisan Diwas, was officially recognized in 2001 by the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government to celebrate Charan Singh’s lifelong work in land reforms, fair pricing for crops, and the empowerment of rural India. His policies still shape India’s agricultural landscape years later.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, sharing messages on social media that featured Sanskrit verses and images celebrating India’s farmlands and the resilience of farmers. Leaders from various political parties shared similar thoughts, recognizing farmers as the backbone of the nation. Public institutions like the State Bank of India (SBI) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also acknowledged the agricultural sector’s contributions.

This observance occurs amid a continued government focus on agricultural welfare through initiatives such as PM-KISAN, crop insurance programs, digital farming platforms, and efforts to promote sustainable farming practices. Experts highlight that innovation, the adoption of technology, and supportive policies are vital for improving farmer incomes and ensuring long-term food security.

As the country reflects on Charan Singh’s legacy, National Farmers’ Day emphasizes the lasting importance of India’s farmers—not only as food producers but also as key supporters of economic stability and national progress.
