Fujitsu develops tech that speeds up “blue carbon” certification with ocean digital-twin system

140

Fujitsu has launched a new “ocean digital twin” technology aimed at transforming how we measure and certify blue carbon. Blue carbon refers to the carbon dioxide naturally absorbed and stored by marine ecosystems like seagrass meadows, seaweed forests, and coastal plants. Traditionally, evaluating blue carbon involves slow manual surveys, expert divers, and extensive data analysis. Fujitsu’s solution significantly speeds up this process by using underwater drones, AI-based image recognition, and real-time environmental modeling.

In field tests, the system achieved over 85% accuracy in mapping seagrass coverage and estimating carbon absorption levels. What makes this innovation impressive is its speed. It can analyze over one hectare of seabed in about 30 minutes, making it nearly 100 times faster than traditional blue carbon assessment methods. This efficiency not only cuts operational costs but also allows for more frequent monitoring, which is crucial for maintaining credible carbon credit certification.

The digital twin technology builds a virtual model of marine areas by combining drone footage, sonar mapping, and AI-driven ecological analysis. This virtual setup enables researchers and policymakers to monitor ecosystem changes, predict carbon capture potential, and verify blue carbon credits more accurately than ever before. As global interest in nature-based climate solutions rises, Fujitsu’s innovation could play a vital role in advancing conservation projects and aiding international decarbonization efforts.

Experts believe the system will help governments, NGOs, and coastal industries streamline the approval process for carbon offset projects while protecting delicate marine habitats. With climate pressures growing, Fujitsu’s ocean digital twin stands out as a timely technological breakthrough for our planet.
